The Art of Japanese Kokedama

originated during EDO (AD 1603) ERA Japan.

Kokedama is a style of Japanese bonsai, where a plant's root system is simply wrapped in sphagnum moss and bound with organic string, transforming it into a sculptural art form. Loosely translated, ‘koke’ means moss and ‘dama’ means ball. The original Japanese form of kokedama had miniature sculptured bonsai trees displayed on handmade pottery or pieces of driftwood. They encapsulate the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-sabi, which can be explained as an appreciation of the imperfections of nature and the transience of natural beauty. Characteristics of Wabi-sabi include simplicity, warmth, earthy, irregular, rough, natural, acceptance and observation. Kokedama are created as a reflection of the Wabi-sabi principles. MARU KOKEDAMA

One of the joys of using sustainable hand-gathered moss is seeing little treasures of dried forest leaves & pine needles nestled within. We keep these elements for we feel its natural wonders only enhances the beauty of our Kokedama. (see images below)

Organic Cotton

We want to continue Kokedama tradition by using 100% organic cotton. This ensures the thread will dissolve naturally into the Kokedama as it continues to grow.

KAWAII!!!

Every now and again, we find little stow aways sleeping in the moss. Don't worry, they are gently removed and given a new home in our potted plants. :)
